We must do more on Afghanistan

Aylesbury Liberal Democrats have called on Buckinghamshire Council and the Government to do more to support refugees in response to the situation in Afghanistan.

Since 2014, Buckinghamshire has resettled only 9 Syrian refugees as part of the Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme. They must do better.

Cllr Peter Cooper, Buckinghamshire Council Shadow Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing said:

"The chaotic withdrawal of coalition troops from Afghanistan has put its local population in immediate danger.

Buckinghamshire must join all UK local authorities in playing its part in welcoming and housing as many Afghan refugees as possible. The plans and decisions required need more than just "consideration".

The council must take immediate positive action and I call on the council's leadership to coordinate cross party action aimed at housing incoming refugees starting today.

Waiting for allocations to be imposed by government at some time in the next weeks is simply not good enough."
